Liverpool are still a potential destination for Real Madrid’s Spanish star Marco Asensio, according to reports from Spain.

The 26-year-old midfielder is still available for sale with a year left on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Los Blancos also want to offer him a new contract,

Both Asensio and Dani Ceballos want to improve their chances of featuring at the World Cup in the winter and are thus pushing for moves away from the capital, and Liverpool could be the saviour for the former.

According to a story covered on Super Deporte by Diario Sport journalist, Francesc J Gimeno, the Madrid star has three offers on the table from Liverpool, AC Milan and Newcastle United.

Asensio has been inconsistent in his time with the giants, but did score in the 2017 Champions League final and against the Reds in their win in the Champions League Quarter Final over them last year.

But in general he hasn’t lived up to the hype first promised, genuinely being unable to find his best position.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti did lose faith in Asensio towards the end of last campaign, but still called him a player of ‘immense quality’ when discussing his contract situation with the press in April.

“Asensio is a player of extraordinary quality. In recent years he has suffered a knee injury that has forced him to be out, but he has lent an important hand to the team."

"I don’t know about the future, although he is talking to the club to renew his contract,”

He bagged ten goals in La Liga this season but many fans feel that those statistics flatter to deceive.

In terms of a move to Anfield, it is a link that doesn’t seem to go away.

But it isn’t the sort of deal that Liverpool have become known for under Jurgen Klopp, Michael Edwards’ and now Julian Ward’s regime.

It's certainly a transfer saga to keep an eye on, but it's unlikely he’ll end up on Merseyside
