Liverpool have released a statement condemning the behaviour of some Manchester City supporters in Sunday's Premier League clash at Anfield.

City suffered their first defeat of the season as Mohamed Salah's brilliant second-half goal secured a much-needed victory for Liverpool.

The final result was overshadowed, however, by allegations against both home and away fans.

City boss Pep Guardiola claims Liverpool supporters targeted him with coins after the visitors had a goal ruled out by referee Anthony Taylor in the second half.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Next time they will do it better. They didn't get me."

"They tried [to throw coins] but didn't get me. They got it on the coach years ago but not this time," added Guardiola, referencing an incident from 2018 when City's team bus was hit by projectiles ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg at Anfield.

The Telegraph claim Manchester City are now set to lodge an official complaint to the Premier League.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have accused City supporters of singing "vile" chants relating to "football stadium tragedies" during the match.

The Merseyside club also claim that graffiti of a similar nature was found on the concourse in the away end.

"We are deeply disappointed to hear vile chants relating to football stadium tragedies from the away section during today's game at Anfield," read a club statement.

"The concourse in the away section was also vandalised with graffiti of a similar nature.

"We know the impact such behaviour has on the families, survivors and all those associated with such disasters.

"We are working with the relevant authorities and we will also work with Manchester City in order to do our utmost to ensure these chants are eradicated from football altogether."

Victory for Liverpool moves them up to eighth in the Premier League, while City remain second.

Guardiola's side are now four points behind league leaders Arsenal, who narrowly beat Leeds United 1-0 on Sunday.

Liverpool next face West Ham at home on Wednesday, while City's next match is against Brighton at the Etihad on Saturday.
