Trent Alexander Arnold’s highlights against Leeds prove he can fix Liverpool’s midfield problems

Liverpool thrashed Leeds United in the Premier League on Monday night

Trent Alexander Arnold made his case to become Liverpool’s next midfield maestro after a stunning performance against Leeds United.

On Monday night, Liverpool travelled to Elland Road hoping to end their five-game winless run.

After a cagey start, Jurgen Klopp’s men moved up the gears and raced to a 2-0 half time lead thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

In the second half, Luis Sinisterra scored to make it 2-1 but Liverpool went on to win 6-1, with Salah, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all scoring.

Despite good performances across the board, Alexander Arnold stood out once again as he starred in his new, more advanced role in midfield.

The 24-year-old was spraying passes at will as Leeds failed to get close to the England international.

Alexander Arnold was also involved in two of the six goals, he set up Gakpo beautifully for the first goal before playing a scintillating pass for Nunez to make it 6-1.

Throughout the 90 minutes, Alexander Arnold had the most touches with 151, whilst also completing 92% of his attempted passes.

His defensive game has been under the microscope all season but Alexander Arnold managed to win three out of four tackles and made one interception against Leeds. You can watch his highlights below.

Alexander Arnold’s performance resulted in plaudits from both fans and former players.

Ex-England striker Gary Lineker said: “Said it for years: I’d love to see @TrentAA play in midfield regularly. It’s the position he grew up playing. Play to your strengths.”

One fan said: “Trent Alexander-Arnold in that midfield is a thing of beauty. He’s cooking. RB shadowed his potentials.”

Another tweeted: “I have seen the light, Trent Alexander Arnold belongs in the midfield.”

Liverpool boss Klopp also praised Alexander Arnold, he said: “I think the goal for Darwin is an exceptional pass. He can be both but in general, you are right we need to be better protected as well because we concede too many counter-attacks.

“Trent played a really good game but when we lost the ball the reaction was a lot different. All players we must be able to protect and for that the formation suits us much better.”

Liverpool will be back in Premier League action this weekend as they take on Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
