Liverpool are interested in the acquisition of 26-year-old Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio, with the Spaniard looking for a way out this summer.

In a newspaper report, Mundo Deportivo straightforwardly stated Liverpool hold an interest in the playmaker. Asensio’s natural talent and ability has been very difficult to ignore during his time with Madrid. He is as naturally gifted as many of the other engine room players Liverpool have been linked with. However, he has been inconsistent during his time with Madrid, with injuries and poor form meaning he’s managed to start more than 20 LaLiga games over the course of a season just once in 6 seasons with Los Blancos.

However, nothing is advanced as of this moment as Liverpool have other priority midfield transfer targets, most notably Barcelona’s Gavi, who is available for £42.5 million this summer.

Asensio and Gavi aren’t the only Liverpool midfield targets either. Jude Bellingham has been linked with a switch to Merseyside after an impressive couple of seasons with PSV while the Reds are also believed to be one of a host of clubs interested in PSV’s Ibrahim Sangare. Aurelien Tchouameni was also being pursued before he moved to Real Madrid.

As for other midfield news in regard to Liverpool, contract talks have reportedly begun with Naby Keita. He is far from a certain starter at Anfield, but capturing the signature of a player like Asensio could light a fire under Keita, with the extra competition providing extra motivation.

Asensio to Liverpool is a deal which one suspects is unlikely to be completed this summer. Nevertheless, it does evidence the Reds’ desire to sign a new midfielder this summer. With their club having acted quickly to sign a forward, Liverpool fans may have to be a bit more patient with the midfield pursuit.
