"The indications I get..." - Romano says Liverpool are "convinced" about signing

Fabrizio Romano has claimed Liverpool remain convinced by the misfiring Darwin Nunez.

Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Monday, and now sit some 17 points shy of table toppers Arsenal.

Indeed it’s been a miserable season for Jurgen Klopp’s side. They have already suffered five defeats in their 17 Premier League games, more than they lost in three of their last four campaigns.

One of the many problems encountered by the Reds this season has been the form of summer signing Nunez. The Merseyside club paid a cool £85million to prise the 23-year-old from Benfica.

However the Uruguay international has blown hot and cold in his first few months at Anfield, while he has been criticised by swathes of media for his erratic style and poor finishing.

Indeed, Nunez has so far taken 55 shots in the Premier League, hitting the target with fewer than half of those attempts and scoring only five goals.

Despite his stuttering form, it seems that Nunez still has the support of his manager.

Romano on Nunez

Transfer guru and reputable in-the-know Romano has claimed that Liverpool are still convinced that Nunez will be a success for Liverpool despite the striker’s mixed start.

The Italian journalist told CaughtOffside: “It’s not been the easiest start at Liverpool for Darwin Nunez, but all the indications I get from both Liverpool and the player’s side are clear: they are convinced it’s just a matter of time.

“He’s happy at Liverpool and Klopp is supporting him.

“No one has doubts in the club or on player side. I think they will keep protecting Nunez.”

Jurgen Klopp backs Nunez

Nunez certainly has the support of Liverpool boss Klopp.

Speaking after the Reds’ 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa, during which the forward missed several chances, Klopp compared Nunez to Poland and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Reds boss also explained that players can sometimes take time to find their goalscoring form.

“There are a lot of similarities (with Lewandowski) to be honest. Yes, I think Lewy would tell the same story.” Klopp explained, via the Athletic.

“We had shooting sessions where he didn’t finish off one. We had bets all the time for 10 euros – ‘If you score more than 10 times I will pay you 10, if you don’t you have to pay me’.

“My pocket was full of money. It’s all about staying calm. When you see the potential, stay calm. It’s so difficult in the world we are living in.

“But it is all coming. You do it like this, the next time you do it like that. I had this situation with Lewy but it is not only Lewy. He is the obvious comparison, I understand.

“It’s just about staying calm and I am super calm. The team is calm as well, the team is completely convinced and that’s really cool.

“Let’s hope we all, him included, stay healthy and then everything will be fine.”
