Liverpool make approach for Manchester United's No.1 transfer target, Ten Hag will be stunned

Liverpool have made a stunning approach for Manchester United’s primary transfer target, Cody Gakpo.

Liverpool have made a stunning approach for Manchester United’s primary transfer target, Cody Gakpo.

Erik ten Hag’s side have been linked with the Netherland’s winger since the summer, while several reports were claiming the Old Trafford club were just days away from signing the winger.

The 23-year-old has been in scintillating form for club and country this term. Gakpo scored three goals in five games at World Cup while for PSV Eindhoven the forward has netted an exceptional 13 times, and provided a further 17 assists.

The Telegraph claimed last week that United would bid £43.1million for Gakpo in January with the Netherlands star seemingly open to the move.

However, it now seems that Jurgen Klopp’s side are rocking the boat.

Liverpool bid for Gakpo

The Times has claimed that Liverpool have made approach for Gakpo, overtaking United in the chase for the forward.

The club have bid a reported £37million for the attacker, with negotiations said to have reached an advanced stage in the past two days. Gakpo is valued between £45 million and £50 million.

If a deal is completed it would bolster Klopp’s wide options, with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota having been sidelined for sustained periods throughout the campaign.

Klopp hints at new arrivals

After a stuttering start to the campaign, Liverpool’s priority for the remainder of the season is to secure Champions League football.

However, a crucial 3-1 Boxing Day victory against Aston Villa helped them move to within five points of Tottenham in fourth.

Klopp hinted at the possibility of bringing in reinforcements next month to help their cause.

“We have two long-term injuries up front. Last January, Luis Diaz came in which was very helpful for that part of the season.

“Doing something similar this time? If it was a positive move, why not?”
