Lewis Hall's highlights against Man City are special, he's the biggest Chelsea academy talent in years

18-year-old Lewis Hall churned in a special performance for Chelsea against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

Lewis Hall may have been on the losing side on Wednesday night but he was hugely impressive in Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

City, who have won the League Cup on eight occasions, beat last season's finalists courtesy of goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez early on in the second half.

There were stand-out performances from City's record-signing Jack Grealish and deputy goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno.

But on the opposite side, 18-year-old Hall churned in a brilliant performance for Chelsea. Although he's traditionally a midfielder, he was deployed as a left wing-back by Graham Potter and excelled in the role.

He looked extremely assured in possession and put that cultured left peg to good use by showcasing a range of passing and deft dribbling throughout his 75-minute outing.

Hall was up against a tricky customer in Mahrez but defended well 1v1 against the Algerian. And he got forward on a number of occasions, forcing two fine stops from Ortega when he sneaked in at the far post.

Chelsea fans sang his name loudly and he received a whole lot of love from supporters for his display. His stats, many of which he was leading in from those involved in the game, were also brilliant.

great composure on the ball, brilliant switches of play and looked good defending 1v1. very good game, need to see him in the squad against newcastle

Better technical ability than most of the first team https://t.co/BOloFJyNtF

Rated him for ages now, unreal baller. Glad to see him finally getting another game in the first team. Hopefully the first of many https://t.co/yzrZma4bI4

Really liked what i saw again. Shame he didn’t get himself a goal but looks better at 18 than most our first teamers do now https://t.co/JINY1lTZZe

John Terry, Chelsea legend and former captain, also waxed lyrical about him on Twitter. and described his first half performance as "great".

What a great first half performance from Lewis Hall 💙

This was Hall's second senior appearance and he looked he'd been playing at the top level for years.

He signed his scholarship forms at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2021, before his Chelsea debut came as a 17-year-old in the FA Cup win over Chesterfield last season, where he played on the left of a back three and registered an assist.

And there's huge clamour for him to feature more prominently going forward, particularly with Ben Chilwell out injured.
