Spanish media make their feelings clear on Trent Alexander-Arnold after Real Madrid debut

The Spanish media have spoken out after Alexander-Arnold's performance against Al Hilal.

The Spanish media have spoken out following Trent Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid debut during the Club World Cup clash with Al Hilal.

On Wednesday evening, La Liga giants Real Madrid got their Club World Cup campaign underway as they travelled to Miami's Hard Rock Stadium to face Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal.

Goals from Gonzala Garcia, who stepped in for an ill Kylian Mbappe, and former Wolves star Ruben Neves secured a shock 1-1 draw in the group H clash.

Heading into the match, many fans were eager to see how former Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold would perform in his first match for the club since completing a transfer in early June.

And after a all-around disappointing performance from the Real Madrid squad, the Spanish media didn't hold back in their assessment of the England international.

After months of rumours, Alexander-Arnold was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player during a presentation at the club's training ground, Real Madrid City, on June 12.

Despite the 26-year-old's contract with Liverpool expiring at the end of June, Real Madrid decided to pay Liverpool £10million to sign the defender early and give him time to adjust to the playing style of new manager Xabi Alonso over the course of the Club World Cup.

In his first game, the right-back failed to impress Real Madrid fans, with his defensive errors proving costly for the La Liga giants on several occasions during the match.

And it appears that this sentiment is shared by the Spanish media, who didn't hold back in their assessment of his Real Madrid debut.

Reacting to Alexander-Arnold's first-half performance, Spanish outlet Marca wrote: "Trying to get more into the game. He went too far in a switch to find Vinicius. He was weak in a duel, and the move ended with Al Hilal scoring offside."

In their live blog covering the match, Marca also highlighted a defensive error made shortly after the hour mark, writing: "I don't know how you saw it on TV, but Trent getting out of the way during the Al Hilal counterattack ... it left me speechless."

Meanwhile fellow Spanish outlet SPORT added: "Little newcomer so far. Trent Alexander-Arnold, too hastily, commits fouls down the right."

Fans will not have to wait long before they can see Alexander-Arnold in action once again as Real Madrid face Mexican club Pachuca in their second Club World Cup match on Sunday evening.
