Mexican and Spanish media make feelings clear on Sergio Ramos' Monterrey debut

The former Real Madrid defender made his Liga MX debut on Saturday, having been without a club since leaving Sevilla in June 2024.

Sergio Ramos made his debut for Liga MX side Monterrey on Saturday, and the media were quick to give their thoughts on his performance.

Ramos, 38, penned a one-year deal at the Mexican side on February 7 after being without a club since he left La Liga side Sevilla at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Of course, the former Spain international is widely regarded as one of the best defenders of the past two decades and won 22 major honours during his 16-year spell at Real Madrid – including five La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns.

Before his first game for Monterrey, Ramos had not made a competitive appearance since he played for Sevilla against Barcelona in a 2-1 loss back in May 2024.

So, given the fact he had been out of action for nearly nine months, how did he fare in his first game back?

Well, from a team point of view, Monterrey beat San Luis 3-1 thanks to a brace from German Berterame and a strike from Oliver Torres.

Ramos captained the side and cut a relaxed figure in the heart of the defence before he was replaced by Tony Leone with 10 minutes of normal time to play.

Mexican outlet AS described Ramos as being the centre of attention.

Journalist David Faitelson said: “Historic day in Mexican soccer… I don't know if a footballer with Sergio Ramos' CV has ever presented himself before.”

While AS’ Javier Cardoso explained: “The central defender was close to scoring a header, and his number 93 was one of the most seen on the blue and white shirts in the stands of the Rayados Stadium.”

Spanish outlet COPE also had their say, they reported: "Sergio Ramos touched the ball for the first time after 50 seconds of play, and then became the voice of the defence. He then joined the attack with a header very similar to the one in the 2014 Lisbon final that almost scored a goal, but crashed off the woodwork.

"His entry into the team gave the defence seriousness and balance, before being substituted in the 79th minute, leaving a bad taste in the mouth."

Marca described: "With his experience and leadership, Ramos brought solidity to the defense and contributed to a key victory for his new team."

Ramos also posted a message on social media shortly after the match.

"After some time away from the pitch, happy and excited with the debut and the win," he wrote.

"Work and perseverance are always the key."
