Man Utd 'Make Decision' on Signing Sergio Ramos As Transfer Takes Twist

Ramos has been linked with a surprise move to United.

An update has emerged regarding Sergio Ramos after the former Real Madrid defender was linked with a January move to Manchester United.

Ramos, who is currently a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Mexican outfit Monterrey, is keen to extend his 22-year playing career as he approaches 900 club games.

The former Sevilla, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain centre-back has been linked with a number of potential destinations since leaving Monterrey, including Serie A side AC Milan.

A report from Spanish publication Cadena SER this week also claimed the 39-year-old had received an offer to join Ruben Amorim's Manchester United at the start of 2026.

Sources claimed talks were only at an initial stage and nothing was finalised. "There are still looming doubts about whether the deal will be completed", added the report, as per Fichajes.

Now, a report from ESPN has confirmed that United are not exploring a deal for Ramos and no talks have taken place.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also gave an update on the situation, saying: “I’m not aware of any contact between Sergio Ramos and Man United now."

Instead, the Premier League club are focused on signing younger players, with those behind the scenes at Old Trafford keen to avoid adding 'ageing stars on inflated wages' to their squad.

It has also been claimed that United are looking at signing a central defender in the near future, with Elche centre-back David Affengruber being linked as a potential target for 2026

But according to the previously mentioned report, United's recruitment drive is currently centred on strengthening the centre of midfield and wing-back.

Some United supporters will be disappointed to hear about their lack of interest in four-time Champions League winner Ramos, who came close to joining United when he was younger.

"Yes, I was close to playing for United," he said in 2023, as per The Sun. "My father is a great fan of that team, but I stayed where I should, Real Madrid."

He added: "Despite everything, I maintain my admiration for the club, for the Premier League and for its players, because the pace of play is different, and it is a league from which we can all learn a lot. I was happy to stay in Madrid."
