Luka Modric might have just won the Puskas award at 39 years old after stunning effort for Real Madrid

The Croatian put Carlo Ancelotti's side ahead against Girona on Sunday afternoon.

Real Madrid fans think Luka Modric could win the Puskas award after seeing his spectacular strike against Girona on Sunday.

Modric, 39, started the La Liga fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And despite the likes of Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo and Vini Jr all featuring, it was the little Croatian who made fans look twice after he netted a sumptuous half-volley.

In the 41st minute of proceedings in the Spanish capital, a Girona defender appeared to have cleared a Real Madrid corner, but Modric brought the ball down on his chest, allowing it to bounce before smashing home a half-volley from at least 25 yards out.

The away side’s ‘keeper Paulo Gazzaniga didn’t stand a chance as he dived to his left more in hope than expectation.

Almost all of his teammates were on the scene to congratulate the veteran midfielder, who would probably have been sitting on the bench if Jude Bellingham was available for selection.

Bellingham, who is banned for two matches after being sent off for dissent during Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Osasuna last weekend, was in attendance inside the stadium and was clearly stunned by his teammate’s strike.

Fans also gave their take on social media.

One said: "Modric surely has just won the Puskas Award. 39 years old by the way."

Another added: "GIVE HIM THE PUSKAS NOW."

While a third commented: "Modric's goal deserves a Puskas."

As a fourth exclaimed: "Modric just redefined the art of scoring goals. Bravo, maestro."

Despite him approaching his 40th birthday, Modric has continued to show his class on a consistent basis this term, having featured in 38 games for the 15-time European champions.

The 39-year-old's current contract is set to expire in June, however, according to journalist Nicolo Schira the Spanish giants could be set to offer him an extension for a further year.

"Real Madrid would like to keep Luka Modric for another season again," Schira wrote on X.

"They are ready to offer to the Croatian midfielder a new deal until 2026, despite he will turn 40 this year. Modric seems oriented to continue to play; because he dreams World Cup 2026."

It is still unclear if official talks are underway between the club and the player but it is safe to say Carlo Ancelotti holds Modric in high regard.

"Modric is a gift for football and even more for those who can enjoy him up close," Ancelotti said in January.

"For me, he is a great captain, also because of the way he prepares [for] this kind of game as if it was a final.

"He's an example for the youngsters."
