Fans have been left in utter disbelief after seeing Ante Budimir produce arguably the worst penalty in football history this evening.

Osasuna found themselves 1-0 down at home to Valencia after Andre Almeida but were given a glorious opportunity to snatch a point when they were awarded a spot-kick.

Budimir, the man who won it, stepped up with 97 minutes on the clock but what happened next was utterly ridiculous.

He performed a stuttered run-up but got it horribly wrong and tripped, flicking the ball off the spot with his left foot.

It rolled into the grateful clutches of Giorgi Mamardashvili, who had the easiest penalty save of all-time.

The commentator summed the events up perfectly when he said, "It's the worst penalty you'll see, certainly this season and maybe ever".

Budimir had his head in his hands and rubbed his eyes in despair, looking like he wanted the ground to swallow him up.

Understandably, social media was awash with reaction to the shocker of an effort from 12 yards.

One said: "Congratulations Ante Budimir. You've just taken the worst penalty the world has ever seen."

A second wrote: "Anyone who tries these d***ish penalties fully deserves for this to happen to them."

A third didn't hold back, adding: "Can safely say that’s the worst penalty I’ve ever seen."

A fourth joked: "If this happened to me I would retire on the spot (literally)."

Another commented: "Quite the night for embarrassing penalty related nonsense."

Osasuna are 11th in La Liga after 31 games, with Valencia in seventh on 47 points after Monday night's draw.
