Arsenal get major transfer boost as top target set to leave on a free

Mikel Arteta could land one his targets for free

Arsenal are said to be showing interest in Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto.

Following the news of Xavi's upcoming departure as manager, the 31-year-old midfielder is said to have turned down offers to remain at the club beyond the summer.

Roberto has played a whopping 363 times for the Catalan side but it is Mikel Arteta's side who are now vying for his signature.

According to reports in Spain, the Gunners have been monitoring his ongoing situation and feel they can convince the Spaniard to join the club later this year.

His current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and there is suggestion he has arrived at the decision due to Xavi's imminent departure.

Having won the La Liga title last season, the 2008 World Cup winner is set to step down from his role as head coach in May.

"I’ve thought about the club and above all the players," said Xavi in a press conference earlier this week.

"I have the feeling that I am doing the right thing, that I am acting with common sense.

"I think the club needs a change of dynamics, the dynamic is very negative."

Roberto has won seven La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League crowns during his lengthy affiliation with Barcelona.

He joined the club aged eight and has since gone on to become one of the club's most decorated stars.

Manager Xavi is said to have suggested the club looks to extend his deal, with claims his advances have now been snubbed.

"I would recommend to the club that they renew Sergi Roberto. They already know it. He is important, he can play in many positions," Xavi told reporters.

"You have to explain very little to him. He knows what Barca is, what it represents. A highly criticised footballer, but he always plays at a high level. I'm delighted with him."
