A clause has been inserted into Anthony Gordon's Barcelona contract that would see Newcastle bank millions if the England international features in 60 per cent of fixtures across a season.

Gordon will be announced as a Barcelona player on Friday afternoon after the Catalan club agreed a £70 million fee with Newcastle for the England international.

The 25-year-old, who has penned a five-year deal with Barca, was also being tracked by Bayern Munich following an impressive campaign in which he finished as Newcastle's top goalscorer with 18 goals.

But the Spanish club managed to get a deal over the line this week, with Newcastle's sporting director Ross Wilson playing a key role in negotiations.

In fact, Wilson managed to insert a clever clause into the deal that could see the Premier League club make up to €1 million per season if Gordon features in 60 per cent of fixtures, according to the Chronicle.

Based on the length of Gordon's reported £300,000 per week contract, Newcastle could receive €5 million from the deal.

The report also suggests that a further €5 million will be paid to the Magpies if he wins silverware with Barcelona, who recently defended their La Liga title.

Alan Shearer gives his take on Anthony Gordon's move to Barcelona

Many were surprised when it emerged that Barcelona were stumping up £70 million for Gordon, including former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer.

"I didn't think that Barca had that type of money," Shearer told Betfair.

"I mean, although maybe they're playing a smart game, and they've now got that money to spend. What they now do with Rashford is a question, whether they have both Rashford and Gordon, I don't know.

"I thought that it was more Bayern Munich that Gordon would go to, because there have been that many rumours about the German side. But Barcelona have come in late and yeah, I was a tad surprised that they could get that amount of money together, albeit you don't have to pay all of it up front, it's over the length of the contract."

Shearer says he is "not upset" that Gordon is leaving St James' Park this summer.

"I guess when a player wants to move and has made it clear his heart's not in playing for the club anymore, that's fine, you do what's best for the football club," he said.

"No one's bigger than the club, so it's a good deal for Newcastle, first and foremost, and it's a really good deal for Anthony Gordon, so, good luck to him. You thank him for what he's done."

"I think he has, without doubt, split opinions with his time at Newcastle. But yeah, good luck to him. I've got no issues," added Shearer.
