Barcelona superstar Frenkie de Jong has spoken out about reports he refused to undergo surgery while earning an incredible wage at the club.

De Jong suffered a serious injury to his right ankle during a La Liga match against Celta Vigo in September 2023, that has continued to plague him for months with several injuries in the same area.

During this time, a report claimed that he had refused Barcelona's requests for him to undergo surgery for the issue, while others suggested he was earning an insane wage despite the club undergoing financial difficulties.

And now, the 27-year-old has spoken out to deny these claims and set the record straight about his recovery and his annual wage.

According to the rumours, the Dutchman earns a staggering wage of €37 million (£31m), making him the highest paid player at the club.

But, addressing the rumour in an interview with Barca One, De Jong said: "It is not true that I earn 37 million.

"That's a very big figure and is a long way off what I really earn."

He also insisted that the decision for him not to undergo surgery on his ankle and to instead pursue more tradition healing was one agreed on by both him and Barcelona.

“Throughout my recovery I have chosen to stay silent" he explained

"It is not true that the club told me I had to have an operation, and I didn't want one. Because everyone at the club, the doctors and myself all agreed that surgery was not the best option."

He added: "It has been very frustrating for a player who lives and breathes football to be out of action for another lengthy period.

"Having three injuries to the same ankle caused me a bit of mental trauma. But I am gradually regaining my confidence to kick the ball hard and go strong into tackles.

"From the outside, the team looks full of energy and quality. I am really keen to be part of that and offer my very best."

De Jong is yet to make an appearance in the 2024/25 season but, as he approaches the end of his recovery, it is possible that he may make his first appearance as Barcelona face Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
