Barcelona plotting wild swap deal in final days of window to spark Premier League domino effect

Barcelona are reportedly plotting a surprise swap deal in the final days of the transfer window which could affect several Premier League clubs.

Les Cules are defending La Liga champions and have made significant moves in the market, bringing in Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri from Manchester City.

Pacey forward Karim Adeyemi has also arrived from Borussia Dortmund, while Joao Cancelo has returned to Barca as a free agent after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.

There have been outgoings, too, with La Masia graduate Ansu Fati joining Monaco on a permanent deal and Spain World Cup winner Ferran Torres moving to Paris Saint-Germain for around €45 million.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has joined Ajax on loan for the 2026/27 season after being pushed down the pecking order following a series of injuries and poor form.

One player it appeared would not be leaving the club was left-back Alejandro Balde, who has attracted interest from Manchester United.

The player's agent, Jorge Mendes, was reported to have held talks with Barca last week about the futures of several players, with Balde's name brought up as part of those talks.

But Fabrizio Romano reports that it would take a 'big amount of money' to sell the 22-year-old, who wants to stay in Spain in any case.

However, Spanish outlet SPORT now sensationally claim that Barca sporting director Deco has been 'cooking up a final transfer bombshell' to swap Balde with Inter Milan left-back Federico Dimarco.

The 28-year-old, who came through Inter's academy, played a key role in the Italian giants' Serie A title success last season, scoring seven goals from left wing-back and providing a staggering 18 assists.

Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup did at least mean Dimarco had a full pre-season with Inter, and he started their opening-day 4-1 win over Monza last weekend.

It is reported that Inter do not want to sell one of their key players, but that negotiations have 'intensified' between both clubs and that talks have been ongoing 'in recent days'.

If the deal goes ahead, it would have a knock-on effect on Manchester United, but also potentially Aston Villa, with United having made an initial enquiry to sign their left-back Ian Maatsen on Saturday.

Though Villa have deemed the 24-year-old unsellable and plan to offer him a new contract, United could come back in with a better offer and potentially even offer one of their players as part of their own swap deal.

United's left-back pursuit has already been dealt a major blow by Newcastle, who are refusing to sell Lewis Hall, while claims that Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly had been offered to United ultimately came to nothing.

Inter have already raided the Premier League to sign Djed Spence and Curtis Jones from Spurs and Liverpool respectively, with left-back Spence able to cover Dimarco's potential departure if necessary.
