Barcelona send 'support message' to Anthony Gordon after he's dropped by Hansi Flick

Anthony Gordon was an unused substitute in Barcelona’s 7-2 victory over Racing Santander, as the Catalan club continued their perfect start to the La Liga season.

Barca ran riot at the Camp Nou as Raphinha scored a hattrick, Joao Cancelo, Lamine Yamal and Gabriel Jesus all hitting the net, with one of their goals coming from a Santander player.

Karim Adeyemi was given the nod ahead of Gordon on the left wing for the match and now the club has posted a supportive message for the England international on social media.

Gordon has made a fine start to life in Spain and La Liga, as he has provided five assists in his six appearances.

Yet, it must be said all the attacking options at Barcelona have made a fine start to this campaign.

Raphinha and Yamal have been the standout players, as in their seven matches, they have scored 11 and eight goals, respectively. Adeyemi has netted on three occasions in his seven appearances and Jesus twice from his four matches.

Gordon is the only attacking player available to Flick who has not hit the net this season, and this is why the Barcelona social media account posted a message of support for the England international.

The Catalan club took to X after their victory over Santander and ahead of their clash with Sevilla this weekend to say: “The goal will come, Anthony.”

Now, while the England international was dropped from the starting line-up and did not make an appearance off the bench in Barcelona’s previous game, Flick is renowned for rotating his squad.

The German manager has so many quality options in attack that he can rotate his squad regularly to keep them as fit as possible throughout the campaign, in a similar fashion to how he approached things last season.

Flick would rotate between Marcus Rashford and Raphinha on the left-wing last season, while doing the same with Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski in the striker position.

So, Gordon will not be worried about the decision to rotate him out for Adeyemi, with the England international named in the squad for the Sevilla match, with it incredibly likely he will make an appearance.

Fans' reaction to Barcelona’s 'supportive message' to Anthony Gordon

Supporters of the Catalan club appear divided on the social media post towards Gordon and his search for a goal.

Several fans were quick to point out that the club seems to be painting a picture that the former Newcastle star is desperate for a goal, pointing out that he has contributed quite heavily with his five assists.

One said: “I'm not even bothered. He's doing his job well. 5 appearances, 4 assists. 7 chances created. 17 takeons 11 successful. He's right on track.”

Another added: “We honestly don’t care about a single player giving us goal anymore, the goals can come from anybody. Just continue that selfless teamwork and keep making us happy.”

As one supporter said: “This is absolutely unnecessary. You are just creating pressure. It doesn’t matter if he scores 20 goals or creates 20 goals. The end result for the team is the same.”

Yet, there were some fans who showed their support for Gordon in their response to the social media post, as they look forward to when he hits the net for the first time.

One supporter wrote: “Anthony’s first goal at Camp Nou is going to hit like crazy.”

Another said: “He's keeping it for El Clasico.”

Barcelona face Sevilla in their next match at 8pm BST on Saturday night.
