Jose Mourinho charged with 'insulting and abusive language' against Anthony Taylor

Jose Mourinho hit out at Anthony Taylor following AS Roma's defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final.

Jose Mourinho has been charged by UEFA for 'insulting and abusive language' against match referee Anthony Taylor following AS Roma's defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final.

Mourinho hit out at Taylor following his side's crushing 4-1 penalty shootout defeat on Wednesday, with UEFA now acting to sanction the Roma boss following his shocking outburst.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in accordance with Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) following the UEFA Europa League final match between Sevilla FC and AS Roma (1-1) played on 31 May 2023 in Budapest, Hungary," a statement reads.

"Charges against Sevilla FC: Invasion of the field of play, Art. 16(2)(a) DR; Throwing of objects, Art. 16(2)(b) DR; Lighting of fireworks, Art. 16(2)(c) DR; Improper conduct of team, Art: 15(4) DR."

Mourinho waited for the Premier League referee in the car park of the Puskas Arena in Budapest after the result.

"What a disgrace. What a disgrace. You are a f**king disgrace! You are shameless," the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager shouted when he spotted Taylor.

The 60-year-old's actions seemingly prompted the wild scenes at the airport as Taylor looked to board his flight to return to the UK.

Angry Roma supporters mobbed the 44-year-old, with fans turning against the Portuguese manager for his conduct towards the official who oversaw the Europa League final.

Former top flight referee Mark Halsey slammed Mourinho's outburst towards Taylor, suggesting a six-match ban for the veteran manager.

"The post-match actions from Roma boss Mourinho by following Prem ref Taylor and other match officials were out of order, but the volley of abuse was even worse. I have never seen that sort of appalling behaviour from a manager towards an official," he wrote in his column for The Sun.

"Refs, like players, try to perform at the best of their ability and Taylor’s display was admirable under extreme pressure. In fact, I was proud of his performance because Wednesday’s final was evil and a no-win situation for the officials. Fourth official Michael Oliver had an impossible job due to the level of protests and appeals from both sides during an ugly 120 minutes.

"It reminded me of a Sunday league football match and the technical area became unmanageable. Both sides lost discipline and there were 16 yellow cards but the punishments were all deserved.

"I felt for Taylor - what else could he do? His only other course of action would have been to show several red cards.

"I would deduct Sevilla and Roma three points from their next European campaigns with another three suspended for the rest of the group stage.

"And I would also ban Mourinho - wherever he goes - for six games because of his unacceptable conduct."
