Newcastle eyeing £100 million swoop for Matthias Jaissle's first signing as fresh development revealed

Newcastle United have reportedly reignited interest in one of their top targets after receiving a major boost in their pursuit.

It has been an extremely frustrating summer for the Magpies, who have sold Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes as well as seeing manager Eddie Howe step away from his position after five years.

Newcastle have made a total of five first-team signings, the most high-profile being the £43 million capture of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim.

But after the appointment of new manager Matthias Jaissle, they are pushing hard for further incomings and have gone back in for a player they explored signing earlier.

According to TEAMTalk, Newcastle looked at signing Borussia Dortmund and Germany star Felix Nmecha when Howe was at the helm but were put off by the asking price.

It was also claimed that Nmecha was not particularly keen on the move.

However, there has now been fresh dialogue between the player and his representatives - with conversations around Jaissle's long-term plans said to have enthused Nmecha's entourage to the point that he is more open to a switch.

Two major midfield exits mean Nmecha would have a starring role for Newcastle.

The former Manchester City player has a £75 million release clause in his Dortmund deal but it is said to only come into play in 2027.

Dortmund are therefore demanding £100 million for Nmecha, having seen English stars Elliott Anderson and Morgan Rogers move this summer for higher than that amount.

Previously, sporting director Nils-Ole Book had said it was "extremely unlikely" for Nmecha to move on as he said he can "pretty much rule out" a departure.

Things appear to have changed in just a short period, with Newcastle now believed to more optimistic of getting a deal done and Nmecha showing a willingness to join his older brother Lukas Nmecha in the Premier League.

They are yet to submit an offer for Nmecha, who showed his quality at his first World Cup with Germany and has been courted by Manchester United.

Howe's exit was another major spanner in the works for Newcastle but early feedback on new boss Jaissle is positive, with performance director James Bunce excited about the changes the former Al Ahli and Red Bull Salzburg boss will make.

"The players were already in a good place, but now there are further changes that Matthias wants to implement to help us take the next step," he told the Gazette.

“What we have now is an opportunity to see Matthias deliver the technical and tactical instructions that he wants. I think we'll already see that against Valencia based on what we've seen over the last few days. That evolution and change will continue throughout the season, and across Mattias' three years here he'll continue to evolve technically and tactically.”

Newcastle take on Valencia in a friendly on Saturday before further matches against Everton, Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg.

They kick off the new season with a clash against Liverpool on 23 August at James' Park.
