Joao Cancelo booed by Manchester City fans during Champions League game

Cancelo is only on loan at Bayern Munich, from City, until the end of the season but it seems that neither of the teams want to keep him.

Joao Cancelo won't want to make a return to Manchester City anytime soon, after their fans booed him during their game with Bayern Munich.

For the past few years, Cancelo has been as integral a part of Pep Guardiola's success at City as anyone, considering his love for attacking full backs.

However, this season, the Portugal star suddenly wasn't so important to the team and lost his place as an automatic starter, eventually leaving in the January transfer window, on loan to Bayern.

The clues suggested that things hadn't ended on the healthiest terms between the player and the manager, but there was still a chance of him coming back in the summer.

On his debut in Germany it looked like the perfect move for everyone, assisting a goal after just 17 minutes on the pitch, but things have gone downhill quickly.

The former Juventus star has recently found himself out of the first team and so his return to the Etihad Stadium for Tuesday's Champions League quarter final wasn't going to be an ideal opportunity for him.

Before the game he appeared to aim a dig at Guardiola, but it was the City boss who would have been smiling when he saw the 28-year-old's name on the substitutes' bench.

Whilst he warmed up on the side of the pitch, with the hosts 2-0, up thanks to Rodri's stunning opener and Bernardo Silva's header, one City fan trolled him, as you can see in the video below.

That wasn't the worst of it for the right back, however, who was brought on for Alphonso Davis in the 81st minute, with his side now 3-0 down, thanks to an inevitable goal for Erling Haaland.

Cancelo was booed by the home fans as he came on, despite technically still being their player and having helped them win two league titles and reach their only Champions League final so far.

And things didn't get better for him every time he touched the ball, with fans around the Etihad continuing their verbal assault on him.

"Cancelo I recorded the boos and DMed it to you incase you didn't hear it properly," one fan harshly joked.

"Imagine how Cancelo feels. Sat on the bench at the start, watched Sane get a positive welcome from the supporters, subbed on to boos after City hung three on his head. Yikes," said another.

A more sympathetic fan argued, "Not a fan of the boo’s for Cancelo to be honest. Always did his best for us!"

"We clapped Sane and boo'd Cancelo you'll never guess which one is the City player," noted a fourth supporter.

Others joined in the enjoyment of the booing however, with another replying, "I love the Cancelo boo! You ain’t bigger than any club."

"I need to rewatch this game on high volume, because I need to hear the boos for Cancelo," posted yet another happy follower.

It certainly seemed to be neutral fans who weren't sure why a player who still belongs to them was being booed by his own fans, it will be very awkward if he can't find a new home in the summer.
