Harry Maguire is currently being discussed in Ghanaian parliament, it's 2022's most random crossover

Everyone is confused.

Harry Maguire is a big talking point among most football fans, especially supporters of Manchester United and England.

But in a bizarre twist, the Three Lions centre half was the subject of a heated debate in the Parliament of Ghana.

Manchester United spent £80 million on Maguire in 2019, making him the most expensive defender in world football.

He's since fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford however, following the arrival of Erik ten Hag last summer. Many believe he's failed to live up to his price tag and role as club captain. Others think he's had unfair stick and recent performances in an England shirt show he's got plenty to offer.

All the talk around the 29-year-old defender is now - oddly - at the centre of Ghana's 2023 budget statement. Check out the video below.

Isaac Adongo, an MP representing the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, condemned Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for the performance of Ghana's economy on Wednesday, bringing Maguire into it via an unexpected analogy.

Adongo addressed Bawumia as an 'Economic Maguire' in reference to the Red Devils skipper.

He said: "But there is a player like you in the United Kingdom, in England, called [Harry] Maguire that is playing for Manchester United.

"Harry Maguire. He is a defender. He is a tackler and throws his body everywhere like he was the best defender in the world.

"Manchester United went and bought him. He became the biggest trend at the centre of Manchester United's defence and began to give assists to opponents."

We're aware this sounds like a fever dream. But yes, Harry Maguire is now a national government issue.

Maguire has only scored one own goal in the Premier League in his United career, in March's 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

It didn't stop Adongo from bringing up his opponent's political own goals in his brutal putdown.

He continued: "In this country, we have an economic Maguire. The same economic Maguire was giving lectures at university on how to restore the value of the city.

"Mr Speaker, why did we give this Maguire the chance to be at the centre of our defence? He became the rest of our own goal.

"Our economic Maguire is taking control of the fundamentals of our economy and destroying all of them."

Reports last month claimed ten Hag is intent on selling Maguire in the summer. United signed Lisandro Martinez from Ajax in the summer, with 'The Butcher' regularly partnering Raphael Varane at the back.

United will consider offers but understand they won't get anywhere near the fee they paid three years ago.

Ten Hag admires Maguire's professionalism and application in training, but is building his own team.

Safe to say a January move to Bolga All Stars in the Ghana Premier League is off the table.
