Gylfi Sigurdsson has given his first interview since his departure from Everton after joining a new club.

The 33-year-old midfielder has joined Danish top division side Lyngby on a one-year contract.

Sigurdsson joined Everton for £40 million from Swansea in 2017 - a club-record deal at the time.

He scored 31 goals in 156 appearances for the club, including a memorable penalty during a 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in 2021.

The Iceland international was not included in the Toffees' Premier League squad for the 2021/22 season, and was released at the end of his contract after the conclusion of that campaign.

He has not played competitively since Everton's final game of the 2020/21 season - a 5-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Now, Sigurdsson has found a new club - and gave his reaction to the move.

Speaking to Lyngby's official website after his move was confirmed, Sigurdsson commented: "I hope that I can come in and contribute with a lot of experience and quality.

"I know that there are a lot of young and talented players in the team, and I really want to learn from me so that we can lift ourselves up together.

"I have been very well received by the boys in the squad and they seem fantastic - I sense that it is a very well-balanced squad, and I am very happy to be here."

Club director Nicas Kjeldsen added: "Gylfi is a player from a tier that we cannot normally bring players from, which is why it is a testament to our club, environment and great development that we can attract a player of his quality."

Sigurdsson's new team-mates include former Stoke and Barcelona defender Marc Muniesa, ex-Brentford centre-back Andreas Bjelland, and Real Madrid academy graduate Andri Gudjohnsen, who plays for the Iceland national team.
