Chelsea fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at the return of Frank Lampard to the club as interim manager.

On Thursday Chelsea announced that club legend Frank Lampard will manage the team for the remainder of the season following the dismissal of Graham Potter on Monday.

Potter was sacked after seven months in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat, in which time he oversaw just 12 wins in 31 games.

Currently sitting in 11th place in the Premier League table with just 39 points from 29 games, it looks highly unlikely that Chelsea will be competing in Europe next season.

Lampard has arrived with the aim of enjoying a respectable end to the campaign, but he doesn't exactly have a stellar recent managerial record himself

He was sacked as Chelsea boss in 2021 after 19 months in the job, leaving the club with the second-worst win record of the Roman Abramovich era.

He then moved north in January 2022 to rescue Everton from relegation, but a year later he left with the Toffees knee-deep in the relegation quagmire.

That hasn't dampened the mood among Chelsea supporters though, many of whom seem delighted that their hero has returned in their time of need. Some even think he will guide the club to a third Champions League triumph.

Before Lampard was officially announced as interim manager, one fan tweeted: "Whatever you think about the Lampard rumours. He gets this club and it proper Chels. I’m all here for it until the end of the season."

Another added: "I [would] rather Chelsea get relegated with Frank Lampard as coach than see Potter's face anywhere near the club, yes I am that bias when it comes super Frank, UCL no 3 loading."

Plenty more fans focussed on Lampard's 13-year playing career at Chelsea, during the course of which he won the Premier League three times, the FA Cup four times and the Champions League once.

"The legend back at the Bridge, you love to see it," tweeted one fan, while another said: "Lampard back. I can't help but love this club."

Another fan admitted that Lampard might not be the greatest manager, but was optimistic his return could work out well.

"This is good business from Chelsea point of view. Lampard might surprise everyone," the fan posted.

If Lampard is to achieve the Champions League dream that some fans think he can, then he will need to guide his team past Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Manchester City or Bayern Munich awaits in the semi-final, while a potential final in Istanbul would be played against one of Napoli, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Benfica.

Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique are the front-runners to be appointed permanent Chelsea boss in the summer.
