Vinnie Jones Suffered Humiliation After Asking Dutch Icons If 'They Wanted Some'

The football hardman struck fear into opponents during his playing career, but was once left red-faced.

Vinnie Jones’ former Wales teammate Dean Saunders has revealed how a footballing icon left the football hardman embarrassed with an on-pitch comment.

Jones, who is best known for his two spells at Wimbledon, was widely regarded as one of the toughest footballers of the 1980s and 1990s.

The 60-year-old formed part of the team nicknamed ‘The Crazy Gang’, who used to intimidate their opponents with their physicality and, at times, violent antics.

And at international level, despite being born in Watford, England, the midfielder earned nine caps for Wales, qualifying to represent the nation through one of his grandmothers, between 1994 and 1997.

But it was in 1996, during a match in Eindhoven, that one iconic midfielder left Jones looking rather silly, with a quick-witted comment.

On November 9, 1996, a Welsh side including Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall, Jones, and Saunders lost 7-1 against the Netherlands, meaning they could no longer qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

The Netherlands side, which included Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar, Arsenal icon Dennis Bergkamp and four-time Champions League winner Clarence Seedorf were too good for the away side managed by Bobby Gould.

Bergkamp bagged a hat-trick while Ronald de Boer, Frank de Boer, Wim Jonk and Phillip Cocu also made the scoresheet.

Despite captaining the side to a complete humbling, it was undoubtedly what happened after he was substituted during the game which embarrassed Jones most.

Speaking on ‘Call Yourself a Fan?’ Saunders, who represented Wales 75 times between 1986 and 2001, recalled how, before the game, Jones shouted: “Do you want some?” towards the Dutch before the national anthems of the respective countries were played.

“Seedorf [and] Bergkamp, they’re all stood there laughing at him, and they beat us 7-1,” Saunders, who scored Wales’ only goal that day, said.

“Bobby Gould took Vinnie off, and as he was walking off, Seedorf got out of the dugout, he said, ‘You just got some!’”

Jones has also previously opened up about the game, which he described as his “worst experience”, when speaking at an event, posted to the Easy Odds YouTube channel in 2020.

After accusing several Welsh players, including Ryan Giggs and then-captain Barry Horne, of pulling out of the game as they knew Wales were going to get a “hiding”, Jones explained how he was voted as captain.

“I was the only f***** stupid enough to put the armband on that day, because you’re playing against one of the best teams in the world away [from home],” Jones said.

The former midfielder then said he encouraged his teammates to “leave one on them” as the Dutch went further ahead.

Jones joked that he even applauded the Dutch side after they scored an impressive seventh goal.

“Bergkamp came past me, and I’ve gave him a high-five, f****** 7-1,” he added.

“The only good thing was Bobby Gould got the sack in the morning.”
