Real Madrid issue explosive statement demanding La Liga president step down after ‘referee conspiracy’ claims

Real Madrid have issued a fiery statement in response to La Liga president Javier Tebas’ comments following the Madrid derby.

Following Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 win over Real, Los Blancos head coach Jose Mourinho pointed out what he believed were clear red cards – Cristian Romero’s challenge on Jude Bellingham and Lee Kang-in’s challenge on Fede Valverde – that referee Ortiz Arias did not give.

Mourinho printed out A4 sheets of paper before showing them to journalists at a post-match press conference.

Despite the fury coming from those associated with Real, La Liga president Tebas insisted there is no ‘refereeing conspiracy’ against the 15-time European champions, which has now prompted Real to call for changes in the organisation’s leadership.

Real Madrid release scathing statement in response to La Liga chief

In a lengthy statement published on the club’s official website on Tuesday (September 22), Los Blancos accused Tebas of “describing and attacking Real Madrid”.

“It is also very concerning that someone who is responsible for representing and protecting the interests of all LaLiga clubs is repeatedly obsessed with targeting Real Madrid, turning our club into a constant subject of his public attacks,” the statement read.

“His latest remarks are particularly serious and incomprehensible, unbecoming of a responsible manager, as they are made in response to an article by an independent journalist in a digital media outlet. However, he reacts against our club and goes as far as to comment on our sporting strategy, which is entirely inappropriate and irresponsible.

“It is utterly surprising that the president of LaLiga dedicates his time and personal platforms to constantly trying to publicly discredit Real Madrid, instead of contributing, from the responsibility of his position, to fostering trust in the institutions that must ensure the impartiality of the competition. By doing so, he continues to damage the image of our competition and Spanish football worldwide.

“Given this inappropriate behavior, which has persisted over time, we believe that professional football in Spain urgently needs a leader capable of managing it and developing its full potential with the fundamental duty of neutrality. It needs someone who understands the nature of their role, as the president of LaLiga is not the owner of the competition but a manager serving the clubs that comprise it and entrust him with its direction. The clubs need someone who serves this mission with honesty.”

What did Javier Tebas say to provoke Real Madrid?

Tebas responded to an article in the Spanish press suggesting a “conspiracy” against Real.

Writing on social media, he explained: “Claiming that referees are directed against Real Madrid is living in another galaxy,

“That narrative serves as an excuse to cover up other shortcomings that are plain to see in these first matches of the season.

“It's more comfortable to point to a conspiracy than to explain what's happening on the pitch.”

Tebas and Real president Florentino Perez have a frosty relationship, with the pair disagreeing on the plan to form a European Super League five years ago.
