He was known for being a tough-tackler, with some labelling him as the hardest man in football.
Vinnie Jones was once hosting an 'Evening with Vinnie Jones' speaking tour when a member of the crowd asked what it was like to be the hardest man in football.
Jones is said to have pointed to the front row where special guest Whitehurst was sitting and said: “You best ask that man.”
Speaking about his experience sharing the pitch with Gascoigne, Whitehurst denied that he broke Gazza's jaw.
He said to the Matt Legg, Combat & True Crime Channel on YouTube: "He puts in his book that I'd smashed his jaw! I didn't break his jaw but he thinks I did.
"He said that he nutmegged me in training and I said if you do that again, I'll break your jaw and he did it again and I broke his jaw, so he says in his book."
Whitehurst continued: "Well, the truth is, I didn't break his jaw."
