Neymar did not hold back when giving his assessment of his own teammates’ performance following Santos’ 6-0 loss to Vasco da Gama on Sunday.

Neymar, 33, returned to his boyhood club in January of this year after previously leaving for Barcelona back in 2013.

The Brazilian’s return to Santos was met with huge fanfare, but things have not gone as well as the forward would have envisaged following his move from Al Hilal.

In his 11 league appearances since his move, Neymar has produced three goals and zero assists as his side sits 15th out of 20 teams in Brazil’s Serie A.

And in line with much of his career, his second spell at the club has been hampered by injury problems, having missed five consecutive league games due to a hamstring injury he picked up in April.

On Sunday, the 33-year-old left the pitch in tears after Santos suffered a 6-0 loss against Vasco da Gama at the Estádio do Morumbi. Former Liverpool and Aston Villa attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho bagged a brace.

The result left the eight-time champions two points above the relegation zone and resulted in Cleber Xavier’s sacking.

Following the defeat, a teary-eyed Neymar explained how he was “ashamed” by the scoreline and even claimed that the “fans have the right to protest”.

Speaking to the Brazilian press, via ge, Neymar said: "I'm completely disappointed with our game. The fans have the right to protest in all sorts of ways, obviously without physical violence. But cursing and insulting people today is perfectly acceptable.

“I feel incredibly ashamed; I've never experienced anything like this in my life. I'm crying out of anger at everything. Unfortunately, I can't help in every way. Today was terrible; that's the reality."

The 33-year-old did not stop there, and continued to berate his teammates by saying “to sum it up: it was s**t”.

The former PSG man added: “It's a disgrace to play that kind of game wearing a Santos jersey. Everyone needs to put their head down, go home, and think about what they want to do. With today's attitude, if we have to do what we did on the field, we won't even need to show up again on Wednesday."

Santos return to action away at Bahia on Sunday, 24 August.
