Anthony Gordon is starting to believe his own hype, according to former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, who is "starting to worry" that the Newcastle winger is "falling into the Rashford trap".
Deeney mentioned Gordon in his latest column about Marcus Rashford and his transformation at Barcelona.
After joining the Catalan club on a season-long loan from Manchester United last summer, the forward has featured regularly under Hansi Flick, notching 10 goals and 13 assists in 36 appearances.
In his own words, Deeney has been one of Rashford’s biggest critics in the past, but the former Watford and Birmingham striker says it is "fantastic to see him maturing and impressing in Spain."

"He comes back as a player humbled by Barcelona and all the better for it," he says in his column for The Sun.
"What has always got under people’s skin about Rashford is that there is more talent in his little toe than in half of the footballers out there, yet we watched him take wage after wage at Manchester United and saw it go to his head."

Deeney added: "That happens — he was a young player at an enormous club. But he became a big figure and did not change."
If the World Cup kicked off next week, Deeney would start Rashford over Anthony Gordon, who has become a regular part of the England setup under Thomas Tuchel.
"It looks like it is between him and Anthony Gordon for that spot at the moment — and I am starting to worry that the Newcastle winger is falling into the Rashford trap," added Deeney.
"Gordon looks like he’s starting to believe his own hype, believe that he can be bigger than Newcastle and deserves a move to somewhere like Arsenal or Liverpool. Someone should intervene."
After mentioning how Rashford took himself away from United and "thrived" as a result, Deeney said Gordon’s performances in Europe have papered over the cracks.
He also mentioned his attitude compared to Rashford.
"Gordon’s ten goals in the Champions League are making his performances this season look better than they have been. Four of those ten came against Qarabag," he added.
"If you go off stats alone, Gordon starts. But if you actually watch the football and see the attitude of both players then it has to be Rashford."
