Newcastle are set to 'break their wage structure' to agree a new contract with star striker Alexander Isak, it has been reported.

Isak signed for the Magpies from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022, for a fee of £63 million.

He has since developed into one of the world's top strikers and has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season.

One of those goals came in the 2-1 Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool on Sunday, which has secured Europa League football for Eddie Howe's side next season.

The aim will still be to ensure that Champions League football returns to Tyneside.

That could yet prove pivotal to whether Isak stays at the club or not amid reported interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona.

Whether those clubs could afford to sign him is another question, with asking prices well in excess of £100 million being quoted by various reports.

But Newcastle are already attempting to ward off interest in one of their key players.

According to GiveMeSport, the Magpies have decided that Isak 'warrants' a contract that will see him earn more than £200,000 per week.

He is currently one of the club's top earners on £120,000 per week.

As per Spotrac, only team captain Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon earn more money than the Swedish striker.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Newcastle won the Carabao Cup, he said: "It's amazing, honestly. I think this is really just the start.

"We're all aware of how much it means, and how long it's been without a trophy. For us to be able to give the fans that is amazing.

"First half was a bit frustrating for me, I didn't really have much to work on. But I kept telling myself, and my team-mates and the staff told me, that my chance would come.

"I think when you go without a trophy for such a long time, it can be in the back of your head. But hopefully now we've won this it can just be bright days in front of us."
