Newcastle United have made their decision on the future of Eddie Howe following the shock loss to Brentford.

On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle United suffered perhaps their most damning loss of the season so far as they were beaten 3-1 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The result comes as the Geordie club has continued to struggle throughout the season, leaving them 14th in the Premier League table with just 12 points, leaving them only two points away from the relegation zone.

Due to the poor performances so far, pressure has been building on Newcastle manager Howe, with many fans calling for him to be sacked despite him leading the club to their first major trophy since 1955 after beating Liverpool 2–1 in the 2025 EFL Cup final.

So far this season, Newcastle have managed three wins, three draws and five defeats from their 11 Premier League matches, with Howe’s side one of only four teams who are yet to win away from home.

Despite this, a report from The i Paper claims that he has ‘cast iron’ support from new club chief executive David Hopkinson and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

The report adds that, given his previous success with the club and their decision to allow him to help decide the next director of football, mean that Howe is untouchable for now.

Not only this, but they are said to be relatively happy with the club's success outside of the Premier League, currently sitting in the last eight of the Carabao Cup and playing well in the Champions League.

Instead, it appears that it is the senior players at Newcastle that are taking responsibility for their poor start to the season, with Kieran Trippier recently admitting the the leadership group have held talks about the ongoing situation.

“I wouldn't say any arguments or anything,” Trippier told Chronicle Live when asked for the reaction in dressing room after the loss to Brentford.

"We've got a lot of experienced players in the dressing room, we've all discussed it. The leadership group, as a team, the manager has fully put a stamp on it, but all we can do as players, it's not the managers, it's the players who need to step up away from home."

Newcastle's leadership group is made up of some of the most senior and influential players at the club, including Trippier, Jamaal Lascelles, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Nick Pope.

"There's no excuses because the record at home is top, away it's not, but as players we need to take responsibility, which we will do as I’m stood here now speaking to you guys. We'll take it on the chin," Trippier added.

"Obviously it's not the best way of putting it, but all we can do is apologise to the fans. All I can say is that the lads are giving everything.”
