Wayne Rooney has been tipped to make a shock return to Manchester United just days after leaving Plymouth Argyle.

On Tuesday, Plymouth Argyle officially announced that they had reached a mutual agreement with former manager Rooney to leave the club following their dreadful run of nine game without a win.

Immediately after the news, fans began to speculate over what could be next for the Manchester United legend, with some reports even suggesting he should consider retiring from management to focus on punditry.

However, one of Rooney's former teammates at United has now suggested that the next step for 39-year-old could be a spectacular return to Old Trafford to offer guidance to one struggling player.

Ex-United defender Wes Brown has suggested that Rooney, who is widely considered as one of the best forwards in Premier League history, should consider going back to United to work with the squad as a striking coach.

Speaking to The Sports Daily, Brown said: “If Wayne wanted to spend time as a striking coach, he would be absolutely brilliant at it; he was one of the best goalscorers we’ve ever seen and was a top playmaker as well.

“If he wanted to do that he would be very good on movement and things like that, he was one of the best to do it.”

And should Rooney consider making returning to his old club, Brown has suggested he could become invaluable to current striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has struggled since joining the club in August 2023.

“Could he help Rasmus Højlund at United? I think all young strikers would love to listen to Wayne and his knowledge,” Brown said.

“When I was a young player I remember getting a few tips from Laurent Blanc and the little things like that can really help. If Wayne was on hand to give out some advice I’m sure everyone would be willing to listen.”

Hojlund made the move to United from Serie A side Atalanta in the 2023 summer transfer window, with the Premier League side reportedly paying a fee of around £72million.

Since then, the Danish international has struggled to find his feet with his new club, scoring just 23 goals in 65 appearances for the Red Devils.

Therefore, bringing back perhaps the club's greatest ever player to offer guidance to the 20-year-old could prove invaluable, should Rooney be willing to take a step back from his career as a manager.
