Wayne Rooney names the three signings Man United need to make in the summer including former player the club brutally axed

Wayne Rooney has identified the three signings he believes Manchester United should make when the summer transfer window opens and only two of them have never played for the club before.

The former United striker has been prominent in the media since he left his managerial post at Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent on New Year's Eve.

That followed spells in charge of Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, all clubs with problems he had to contend with that were outside his control.

Rooney is regularly asked about Man Utd now he's back out doing the media rounds and, with his manager's hat on, he gets to have a say on who he thinks they should be picking up in the transfer market.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has had a torrid season at the base of an awful Red Devils team this season and a new stopper is top of Rooney's target list.

"I'd probably sign David De Gea back," the former United and England striker told Amazon Prime Video Sport. "I think Manchester United have missed him and I think he could still do a very good job for Manchester United.

De Gea spent an entire season out of the game after he was unceremoniously released by United at the end of truncated contract negotiations.

As his replacement has faltered badly, De Gea has mostly returned to form with Fiorentina in Serie A.

With Rasmus Hojund misfiring, United need help at the other end too. Rooney has his eye on a striker too.

"The second one, I'd probably sign [Victor] Osimhen as a number 9, I think he's a very good striker and possibly available," said Rooney.

The Nigerian is on loan at Galatasaray after his relationship with parent club Napoli turned sour. As Rooney notes, he could well be available in the summer.

"And the third one, it'd be difficult but I'd probably try and sign [Marc] Guehi from Crystal Palace as a centre-back. I think he would have a real good impact on the club."

United have had an awful season in the Premier League. Manager Erik ten Hag was dismissed and succeeded by Ruben Amorim but haven't improved appreciably in terms of their league form.

Yet they have the carrot of a Champions League spot still dangling before them as the season ends.

Amorim's men travel to Bilbao on Wednesday to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final with a place in Europe's premier club competition up for grabs.
