Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has named surprise players as his best and worst teammates.

After scoring 253 goals across 559 appearances for the Red Devils, Rooney is considered one of the the greatest players ever to put on a United shirt.

During his 13 year spell at Old Trafford, the former captain enjoyed playing alongside some of the club's best players, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand.

But when asked to name both the best and the worst teammates he had ever played with at United, Rooney picked two names that will no doubt shock fans.

While appearing on rugby league legend Rob Burrow's podcast, Seven, Rooney was asked to pick out just one player from his United days as the very best.

He replied: "Best teammate? I'd say Darren Fletcher, he's my best mate.

"There were a few - John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Michael Carrick - we were all really close. But Fletch was probably the one. We sat next to each other in the dressing room and shared really good moments on and off the pitch together. We're really good friends s I'd say Darren Fletcher is my best teammate and closest."

Rooney and Fletcher spent an impressive 11 years together at Old Trafford, with the Scotsman graduating from the academy to join the senior team just two years before Rooney joined the club from Everton.

In total, the two men played 228 matches together, with only six other players at United featuring alongside Rooney more than Fletcher.

The pair remained from the start of their time together at the club right up until Fletcher departed in 2015.

Fletcher currently serves as a first-team coach, with his twin sons Jack and Tyler both in the United youth academy and tipped for bright futures.

Rooney, meanwhile, also singled out Nani as his worst teammate at Old Trafford, admitting that he found the the four-time Premier League irritating on the pitch.

"My worst team-mate - there are a lot more than you'd probably think," joked Rooney.

"On the pitch, the toughest one was Nani. He was frustrating to play with."

Nani also left United permanently in 2015 and continued to play right up until December last year, when he announced his retirement from professional football following a brief spell with local side Estrela da Amadora in his native Portugal.
