Ruben Amorim has called out a Manchester United star for making the "wrong choices" in his side's 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Amorim suffered a sixth Premier League loss of his tenure at Old Trafford after former United winger Anthony Elanga scored the only goal of the game just five minutes in.

The Sweden international raced from his own half at a frightening pace - sprinting 85 metres in nine seconds - before slotting home past Andre Onana.

United had the majority of the ball and more shots on target in the game at the City Ground but drew a blank for the eleventh game in the Premier League this term.

Remarkably they looked most threatening late on when Harry Maguire was sent on as an emergency striker and had an effort cleared off the line by Murillo late on.

There weren't many impressive performers but Alejandro Garnacho received plenty of criticism for his poor decision making. The Argentina international regularly ignored the overlapping run of Patrick Dorgu from left wing-back and had a number of shots which were high and wide.

Amorim admitted that Garnacho was "trying too much" but praised his work ethic in tracking back, a key area which the Portuguese boss demanded improvement in.

"He is trying," Amorim said about Garnacho in his press conference.

"Sometimes you have one day when you are doing the right things but in the final third we were not that good and that can happen.

"That can happen in the game. The most important thing in the game is when he needs to run back he is running back.

"Of course we want a player who is one against one, sometimes he is trying too much, he has Dorgu to make a movement but I think he wants to help the team and is doing the best.

"Sometimes he doesn’t make the best choice but I think you can point to any player [and say that] today."

Meanwhile, plenty of United fans have changed their tune on January signing Dorgu, who initially impressed but was widely criticised for an ineffective display on Tuesday.

Forest legend Martin O'Neill, on TNT Sports punditry duty, slammed the former Lecce man after the game, stating: "I could have done what he did! He's wide left-hand side, he's got the ball and you're saying: 'Come on! Your job is to take players on. Get at them!'"

United return to action on Sunday when they take on Manchester City in the derby and look to do the double over their rivals.
