Ruben Amorim has appointed a six-player leadership group to police the Manchester United dressing room – and fans can’t believe who's included.

Amorim, 40, will be hoping for a better season than his first in charge. In 2024/25, United finished a record-low 15th in the Premier League and lost to Spurs in the Europa League final.

The additions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon could help the squad moving forward as Marcus Rashford has departed on a season-long loan to Barcelona.

Meanwhile the futures of Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho remain uncertain – although it’s fair to say Garnacho’s days at United are numbered based on what Amorim told BBC Sport in a recent interview.

"Garnacho is a really talented boy. But sometimes things don't work out," Amorim explained.

"You cannot explain specifically what it is. It's clear he wants a different thing with a different leadership.

"They want new challenges. The market is open. I'm just working with the players that I think are going to stay."

He also revealed the six players he has tasked with being part of a dressing room leadership group ahead of the new campaign.

"I don't treat the players as babies,” Amorim added. “But they have rules now, and that can change the way you train.

"I'm always on top. If you don't train in the right way, I have footage to show you. And I show you in front of everybody."

Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Tom Heaton, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui have been appointed to deal with “small things” in the dressing room.

In a separate interview with The Athletic, Amorim added: “So it’s not just the oldest one, Nous [Mazraoui] is in the group because he’s a character that I like.

“I try to understand the dynamic of the group, try to reach every space. They are the guys who are responsible for keeping everyone in line.”

And fans were quick to react on social media, with some left surprised by the list.

One fan said: “Dalot of all people.”

Another added: “Leadership and Dalot in the same sentence?”

A third claimed: “What the hell is Dalot doing there?”
