Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane once revealed that he personally contacted a current Red Devils star to apologise for his comments.

Keane, 53, is known for his no-nonsense approach to football both as a player and a pundit.

Unlike the current crop of talent at Man United, Keane was used to winning silverware during his time at Old Trafford and finished his playing career having won 19 major honours, 17 of which came at United.

These days, he is often part of Sky Sports and ITV’s live football coverage and is no stranger to lambasting players who he feels fall below his high standards.

Speaking on an episode of The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, back in 2024, the former Republic of Ireland international revealed that he "apologised" to a United player.

"I was harsh on Harry Maguire for footballing reasons, and obviously we do a lot of [Manchester] United matches," Keane said.

"Obviously, he's struggled at United and had a tough time with England, but more so at club level. We're on about the mental health of players, and I've crossed the line with Maguire. I mocked him a little bit, and it's not nice.

"I've played the game, I know how hard it is. But I'm also big enough. I bumped into Harry a few months ago and I apologised to him.

"Sometimes as pundits, we get it wrong as well, but there is a point where you go, if it's personal then it's crossing the line."

Maguire had previously spoken about how he could ā€œdeal withā€ pressure back in 2023.

"I would not say I am a person who struggles with pressure mentally," said Maguire. "I have been through a lot in the last couple of years, and I have been Manchester United captain for nearly four years. You take a huge amount of responsibility and everything that comes with it, and that is a lot of bad as well as good.

"I would not say I am used to it, but I can deal with it. It pretty much takes the pressure away from my team-mates and puts it all on myself. It makes them play better, for sure.ā€
