Rasmus Hojlund has apologised to Manchester United fans after a second consecutive 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

United were hoping to bounce back from a derby humbling by rivals Manchester City when they took on a second-string Newcastle in a repeat of last season's Carabao Cup final on Wednesday.

But the Magpies heaped more misery and embarrassment on the Red Devils, with Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock all finding the net in front of 7,000 fans who made the trip.

The pressure continues to mount on Erik ten Hag, who has now lost eight of his first 15 games in all competitions this season.

The latest performance was so bad that new £72 million signing Hojlund felt the need to issue an apology.

The Dane, who have away a penalty in his first Manchester derby on Sunday, came off the bench, replacing Anthony Martial in the 64th minute as Ten Hag sent him, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes on in a bid to salvage something.

The game had already gone at that point, with Newcastle 3-0 up and extremely comfortable.

But Hojlund took to Instagram after the limp loss and wrote: "Sorry for today everyone."

Hojlund has scored three times since signing for United, with all of his goals coming in the Champions League in defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray respectively.

Martial, meanwhile, is still a United player nine years on despite scoring just 89 goals in that team.

The Frenchman's presence in the squad was questioned by Neville, who doesn't believe "we're being harsh enough" on the decision to keep him.

Sometimes I ask myself the question, when you walk away from a broadcast like Sunday, ‘are we being too harsh?’.

“But when you hear that stat that a guy has been at the club nine years - a goalscorer that cost £50m, £60m, £70m - has scored basically 89 goals in nine years and we still can't get him out of the club, I don't think we are being too harsh. I don't think we're being harsh enough.”
