A Manchester United insider has suggested that the side’s current style of play is not the type of football that Michael Carrick wants to implement, as his future hangs in the balance.
Since succeeding Ruben Amorim as Manchester United head coach back in January, Carrick has guided the 20-time Premier League champions to nine wins, two draws and two losses in his 13 matches in charge, taking United to third in the Premier League and all but guaranteeing Champions League qualification. The side need just two points from their four remaining games to secure it for the first time since the 2022/23 campaign.
Despite fans, pundits and, most importantly, the players seemingly being on his side, Carrick’s future is yet to be decided, as managers – including Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique and Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola – continue to be linked with the club.
On Thursday, Kobbie Mainoo – who has been given a new lease of life since Carrick’s arrival after being largely overlooked by Amorim, which had almost led to him leaving his boyhood club – penned a new contract at Old Trafford through to 2031.

This comes just a few weeks after Harry Maguire signed a new deal, another decision which appears to show that United are already focusing on next season.
But if Carrick does extend his stay beyond the current campaign, could fans yet see a change in playing style?
Carrick favourite to become permanent Man Utd boss
According to veteran Manchester United journalist Andy Mitten, Carrick made it his focus to get results rather than implement his style of play when he took on the role earlier this year.
It is suggested that the current style is far from what Carrick would ideally like to implement.
“This isn’t Michael Carrick’s team yet,” Mitten said on Talk of the Devils.
“I’m told he’s not even playing the type of football he wants to play.”
He added: “Michael Carrick is the clear favourite [to take the job], but a definite decision has not been made yet.”
Several former United players, such as Gary Neville, have praised Carrick’s impact, while also harbouring concerns about how the side will cope with the added fixtures next season, but Jamie Carragher believes the former England midfielder has to be United’s next permanent manager.
In his Daily Telegraph column on Friday (May 1), the former Liverpool defender said: “Carrick is the ideal choice to assume full control this summer because of what the club needs right here, right now. It makes sense in the short term with an eye on the long term.
“Over the past four months, Carrick has bought himself and the United board a valuable commodity that is generally elusive in football: time. He has restored a sense of normality – an underestimated quality at any club, let alone one of the biggest.”
Following Sunday’s clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford, United travel to Sunderland before taking on Nottingham Forest in the season’s penultimate game. The Red Devils then face Brighton away in the final game of the campaign.
