Manchester United could sign five free agents after the transfer window slammed shut including ex-England star.
Although the transfer window closed on 1 September, clubs are still able to bring in players without a club, with some big names still available.
United finished a busy transfer window with the deadline day signing of Senne Lammens from Belgian side Royal Antwerp. After several high-profile mistakes in the opening games from Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana, United decided they had to sign a goalkeeper.
Although Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez was linked, executives decided to sign the inexperienced Belgian instead. It marked the end of a successful window for Manchester United, who also overhauled an attack which scored just 44 league goals last season.

Experienced Premier League forward Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo joined from Wolves and Brentford respectively, along with Benjamin Sesko.

Completing an attacking overhaul and replacing the goalkeeper were clear positives for United, but they were unable to sign a midfielder.
Although they looked at Brighton's Carlos Baleba, the south coast club wanted a similar fee to the £115m they received from Chelsea for Moises Caicedo, which United could not afford.

It leaves them light in central midfield with just Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte as options.
What free agents could Man United sign?
Josh Brownhill, who captained Scott Parker's Burnley to automatic promotion last season, is available.
The 29-year-old played for Manchester United as a schoolboy, before leaving to join Preston North End and Bristol City, and then making the switch to Turf Moor.

He is a hard-working, experienced defensive midfield player, who could offer some legs to United's troublesome midfield. Similarly, the former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could provide energy in the middle of the park.

The 32-year-old was released by Besiktas last month, but is unlikely to be welcomed at Old Trafford given his Anfield connection.
Former Barcelona and Spain striker Paco Alcacer is also available. And after the departure of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli on a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, United are potentially light at centre forward.

Sesko is only 22 and needs time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, while Joshua Zirkzee is the only other recognised striker at the club.
Sergio Reguilon is also available as a free agent, following his departure from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Spanish left-back was inconsistent in a prior stint at Old Trafford, but could provide cover for the youthful Patrick Dorgu at left wing-back.
Former England star Dele Alli is also available after he was released by Como after just one appearance but given his recent run at clubs, even MUFC and their recent form might see it as too much of a gamble.
