Ruben Amorim gave a brutally honest answer when a reporter asked him about Marcus Rashford’s absence during Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat against Wolves at Molineux.

Amorim, 39, saw his side put in a poor performance in the Midlands, which sees them to 14th in the Premier League, just seven points above the relegation zone.

The United boss was not very pleased with his team's showing. Captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a red card after a second bookable offence 47 minutes in.

Then Wolves scored directly from a Matheus Cunha corner on the 58-minute mark before Hwang Hee-chan added a second on 99 minutes.

But it was Amorim's response to a question about Rashford, 27, that has really captured the interests of fans.

Of course, the United forward was left out of United’s squad once again, having previously explained how he was “ready for a new challenge and the next steps” when speaking with Henry Winter on December 17.

When asked about the player's absence while speaking with Prime Video, the Portuguese gave a fairly blunt answer.

“It's always the same reason," said Amorim.

"We have to be same professionals...same guys, winning or losing.

"Losing, I have to be stronger.

“I will continue with my idea until the end”

The journalist then asked if Rashford had "been showing anything different".

"If he's not here, you can make up your mind," Amorim replied.

Rashford has been omitted from the United matchday squad for the side's last four fixtures - against Manchester City, Tottenham, Bournemouth and now Wolves.

The England international has been linked with a move away from the Premier League, with PSG and several Saudi Arabian sides the favourites to sign him.

Fans on social media were keen to give their thoughts on Amorim's comments about Rashford.

One fan leapt to the defence of Rashford, they said: "He will not win a game until he brings back Rashford, the most important player at Man United in the last 4 years."

Another added: "Could this poor performance have something to do with Rashford’s absence??"

While a third commented: "Rashford must go! Soon as POSSIBLE."

A fourth explained: "Rashford has scored like 10 goals in the past 2 years, why do people think he would have a positive impact on United?"

A sixth said: "They should stop asking him about Rashford."

Next up, United will host Newcastle United at Old Trafford on December 30 before they face a trip to Anfield where they will take on Liverpool on January 5.
