Man Utd Legend Has ‘Offered Himself’ to Celtic if Roy Keane Takes Job

Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic boss after a 3-1 defeat to leaders Hearts

A Manchester United legend has ‘offered himself’ to Celtic if Roy Keane emerges as a surprise candidate for the club's managerial role.

Brendan Rodgers announced his resignation as Celtic manager on Monday, October 27 with the team second in Scottish Premiership, eight points behind Hearts.

Martin O'Neill has returned to Celtic on an interim basis, having previously managed the club between 2000 and 2005.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday morning, the Northern Irishman said he is 'only keeping the seat warm' until a permanent manager is appointed.

O'Neill will be assisted by Shaun Maloney, the former Celtic player, who was sacked as Wigan manager in March when the club was 15th in League One.

Ange Postecoglou, who managed Celtic from 2021 to 2023, has emerged as the bookmaker's favourite to return to Celtic Park.

However, talkSPORT claimed that sources close to the Australian have downplayed a potential return.

Postecoglou was sacked as Nottingham Forest boss earlier this month, after a disastrous 39-day spell at the City Ground.

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna is another contender for the Celtic boss, but he is under contract with the Championship club until 2028.

McKenna led Ipswich to back-to-back promotions from League One into the Premier League, although they were relegated in their first season back in the top flight, and now sit 12th in the second division.

Having been the pre-season favourites for promotion, Ipswich will not want to lose McKenna at this stage of the season.

One outsider for the Celtic job would be Keane, who won both the league and league cup as a player for the Glaswegian club.

Keane has not taken a managerial role since leaving Ipswich in 2011, but he has not ruled out a return to management.

His former Manchester United teammate, Jaap Stam, said earlier this year he would love to work with Keane if he takes charge of a club again in the future.

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Champions League odds, Stam said: "I would love to see Roy Keane back in management and I’d love to be his assistant manager.

"He can give a lot of individual advice to players and how they can improve, but the decision will be up to him. He is doing well in punditry at the moment.

"I think he has the potential to be a great manager because he knows so much about the game.

"It’s a very different life in management, day and night, you have to be ready for the lifestyle and the club in question and the players.

"I’m sure he enjoys his current role but I’d love to see him in the dugout again, if he needs an assistant then I’ll be there."

Despite the speculation, it seems unlikely that Keane would leave his punditry commitments for a return to management.
