In a recent podcast appearance, Wilfried Zaha opened up on his ill-fated spell at Manchester United and how a false rumour about sleeping with David Moyes' daughter contributed to his downfall at the club.

Zaha became Sir Alex Ferguson's final signing as United manager before his retirement in May 2013, but the Ivorian winger failed to make an impact under his successor Moyes.

In fact, after loan spells at Crystal Palace and Cardiff City, he left the Premier League club in 2015 after making just four first-team appearances.

The 32-year-old has previously discussed his time at Old Trafford, revealing that it was "hell" living away from his family. "I went through so much with United, with England," Zaha said in an interview with Shortlist.

"I was dealing with this at 19; living in Manchester by myself, nowhere near anyone else, because the club had a hold over where I lived. They hadn't given me a car, like every other player."

He added: "When I was at United I had [money], but I was still so down and depressed. People think your life's different because you've got money, you've got fame, so they don't treat you the same."

Speaking on the Spiller Productions podcast this week, Zaha brought up a rumour that circulated around a romantic liaison with the daughter of United boss David Moyes, which contributed to the lowest point of his career.

"When I was there [at United], there was just so much stuff going on. I went on tour, I was playing well, everything's promising; the next minute I'm just dashed out the team, and there was no reason as to why," he said.

"Rumours then start that I'm sleeping with the manager's daughter. No one's actually come to me and asked, 'Is this true?'. Even down to the players, it's just, everyone just gets on with it because it's a dog-eat-dog world.

"If you're not thriving like everyone else, you're cast aside. I've never left the south, the south was all I knew, and then all of a sudden, Manchester United were one of the best teams in the world, and then it's not going well and there's no shoulder to cry on."

Zaha has previously opened up on the anguish he suffered over the false rumour.

"No one at the club at all told me anything, I didn't know what to do whatsoever," Zaha told former teammate Rio Ferdinand on The Locker Room.

"I remember tweeting something about it saying 'silly rumours' because it was getting too much so I had to say something myself and then I remember the club media messaging me saying 'you shouldn't have done that, you shouldn't have done this' and I'm thinking you haven't helped me.

"I'm here by myself, struggling because people are telling me I've slept with the manager's daughter and that's why you're not playing me."

Zaha said he never had a discussion about the rumour with Moyes, adding: "The funny thing is, it's carried on for so long I felt like, is the manager not going to come and have a word with me over this?

"That's how I felt and I'm thinking this is ridiculous man. Up to this day I still get people that think that's true and I've never even met his daughter."
