Man Utd's transfer plan takes crushing blow after Premier League club announcement

Manchester United have suffered a major blow to their plans of signing one of their top targets after the player agreed to a new contract.

United ended the transfer window with four new signings, including Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Karl Darlow.

But INEOS were left frustrated in their attempts to strengthen Michael Carrick's squad in other positions after capturing three midfielders, and one of their problems was landing a left-back.

Man United target Lewis Hall agrees new Newcastle United contract

Carrick wanted to sign a left-sided defender to rival the long-serving Luke Shaw, who sees his contract expire in 2027, and identified Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall as their top priority.

Man United repeatedly tried to sign Hall throughout the summer, but were told he wasn't for sale by the Magpies, who had already offloaded several of their key players.

The 13-time Premier League champions were even told on deadline day that it would take a bid of more than £75million for the Toon to even consider selling him, and they weren't willing to spend beyond their means to sign the 22-year-old.

It then emerged that Hall was Man United's top target for the 2027 January transfer window, though the club always planned to give the Englishman a new contract and have since convinced him to commit his future to the promising Matthias Jaissle project.

According to transfer guru Ben Jacobs, Hall is set to sign a new deal at St James' Park and has reached an agreement with the Magpies after being 'impressed' by new boss Jaissle.

The German, who replaced Eddie Howe's replacement, has gone unbeaten in his opening three Premier League games, including a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and 2-2 draws with Liverpool and Bournemouth.

A promising start to life in England's top flight will only feel even better now that Hall is set to sign an improved contract after watching the England international produce exceptional performances so far this term.

What Lewis Hall signing a new contract means for Man United

Hall signing a new deal at Newcastle doesn't end Man United's chances of signing him in January or next summer, but it does make their pursuit even harder.

The North East giants already had security over the player's future, as his current deal was set to expire in June 2029.

The youngster's contract will now be extended by even more years, which means Newcastle can charge more than their reported £75million asking price.

As they've already sold Sandro Tonali for close to £100million, it wouldn't be surprising if they valued their most prized asset in that ballpark, especially given his age and potential.

United could therefore be forced into looking elsewhere in their chase for a new left-back, as Hall's new contract surely puts him out of their reach financially.
