Roy Keane references scathing 'prawn sandwich' rant in Man Utd third kit launch video

Roy Keane references scathing 'prawn sandwich' rant in Man Utd third kit launch video

There was a humorous touch to the video.

Roy Keane played a major role in the launch video for the new Manchester United third kit - and referenced one of his infamous rants as a player.

United supporters were pleasantly surprised to see the club legend involved in some capacity at Old Trafford, with the Irishman having not officially worked for the club since his acromonious departure in 2005.

The 51-year-old helped to launch the club's new third kit, which will be used in all competitions throughout the 2023/24 season.

A retro-style white shirt with red markings, the traditional United crest has been removed and replaced by the red devil which features on the club's full badge.

TeamViewer remains the front-of-shirt sponsor, and is detailed in red and white on the shirt.

You can see the full launch video below.

But there was a notable reference at the end of the video that not all fans may be fully aware of.

Roy Keane references prawn sandwiches in Man Utd kit launch

In the final seconds of the video, former United captain Keane is sat at a table filled with prawn sandwiches.

The scene actually links back to a rant from Keane after a win over Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv at Old Trafford in 2000.

It was a must-win game for United to secure qualification for the Champions League knockout stages - although they didn't exactly make easy work of it, with a 1-0 victory.

Keane, known for his fierce enforcement of standards at Old Trafford, tore into the atmosphere at the ground.

"Sometimes you wonder, do they understand the game of football," he began (quotes via Daily Mirror).

"We're 1-0 up, then there are one or two stray passes and they're getting on players' backs. It's just not on.

"At the end of the day, they need to get behind the team.

"Away from home, our fans are fantastic. I'd call them the hardcore fans. But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch.

"I don't think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell 'football', never mind understand it."
