Manchester United fans think Lisandro Martinez should be their captain in the future after a segment of an interview went viral.

United have regressed this season amid the extended absence of Martinez, who suffered a foot injury that required surgery at the start of the campaign.

Since then, the Old Trafford club have crashed out of the Champions League, finishing bottom of Group A behind Galatasaray, FC Copenhagen and Bayern Munich after winning just one match.

Erik ten Hag's side also exited the Carabao Cup at the Round of 16 stage while their performances in the Premier League have been largely dismal.

However, United have been given a welcome boost as Martinez is set for a January return from the sidelines.

Ahead of his return, the tenacious centre-back told MUTV about his values and his desire for United to win every game.

Martinez said: “Being grateful. You have to be grateful. Look at this place. Look at the pitch, the stadium, the people, the fans, the passion.

“You have to fight for your people. You have to fight for everybody. It’s not just about you. It’s about millions and millions and millions of people.

“So we need to be humble, keep our feet on the ground and go. And don’t stop. There are no excuses.”

He added: “It's my mentality to win everything and we're out of the Champions League, so I'm disappointed. But now we need to win every game and achieve everything we can."

Upon seeing the clip, some United fans on social media said Martinez sounded like a future United captain, while others praised his general attitude.

One person said on X, formally Twitter: “He’s gonna be a captain in the future.”

Another wrote: “Martinez understands.. can’t wait to have him back in the team next month!”

A third said: “Some of our players need to listen to this.”

A fourth added: “There's a reason people with this type of mindset consistently have good performances.”
