Manchester United made kit change not seen since 1957 for game against Galatasaray

Erik ten Hag's side made history in their Champions League clash against Galatasaray.

Manchester United created a piece of history when they walked into the hostile Ali Sami Yen stadium wearing red shorts and white shirts.

Erik ten Hag's side were met with thousands of whistles and boos on Wednesday night as a giant 'Welcome To Hell' sign awaited their arrival.

United would later squander the chance to pick up a crucial victory in the Group A tie against Galatasaray, letting slip a two-goal lead twice to draw 3-3 against the Turkish outfit.

Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay managed to find the scoresheet, and for large spells, they looked in complete control.

But two unfortunate errors from Andre Onana and a wonderful Kerem Akturkoglu strike meant the spoils were shared on a chaotic night in Istanbul.

Away from the performance and Manchester United made a small piece of history when they sported a kit format they have never worn before.

That's right. For the first time in their 145-year history, United turned up for a game wearing white shirts and red shorts.

In fact, United, who typically pair their white away strip with white shorts, used red shorts for the first time in 66 years, when former manager Matt Busby experimented with the colour during the 1956/57 campaign.

As per Museum of Jerseys, the red shorts appeared for both legs of their European Cup semi-final against Real Madrid after being trialled in a league game against Bolton Wanderers.

On Wednesday night, United came out wearing their seventh different colour combination of the 2023/24 season.

The Reds, who currently sit bottom of Group A on four points, were also forced to change their usual strip when Galatasaray visited Old Trafford in September. They wore black shorts and socks.

United must now beat Bayern Munich, who have already qualified, in their final group stage game on December 12 to stand any chance of progressing into the knockout rounds.

In fact, United must not only record a win against Thomas Tuchel's team, but Galatasaray must draw also with Danish side Copenhagen for the Reds to qualify.
