Referee steps in to ask Man Utd to substitute Harry Maguire against Fulham

Referee steps in to ask Man Utd to substitute Harry Maguire against Fulham

It's a weird one.

John Brooks was forced to step in and tell Manchester United to substitute Harry Maguire against Fulham.

In the 60th minute of United's crucial Premier League clash with Fulham Brooks gestured to Erik ten Hag's bench claiming he had spotted something wrong with Maguire.

Indeed, the England international had previously gone down four minutes into proceedings to be treated for a head collision. Maguire at the time had clear marking around his left eye and appeared groggy.

Nevertheless, he came through the necessary checks and was deemed okay to carry on.

Brooks however, appeared concerned for Maguire in the second half, and the defender was made to leave the pitch momentarily.

Despite having Raphael Varane on the bench, Maguire remained on the pitch after the second check.

On commentary for TNT Sport, Jermaine Jenas said: "Well, this happened earlier on in the game, didn't it? If he's having issues now he's going to have to come off.

"You [commentator Darren Fletcher] called it initially from up here, you said, 'He doesn't look right'".

Fletcher interjected: "And he doesn't now Jermaine. You look at his face, he doesn't now."

Jenas add: "He looks a bit dazed. I have to say from a performance point of view he's been solid. He's put in some big blocks and done what he needed to do.

"But there's now doubt that he doesn't look right. I would be very surprised if he can carry on."
