A report has revealed how the Manchester United squad reacted to the news of Erik ten Hag staying on as manager.

Ten Hag will remain as manager of Man United following a post-season review conducted by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The board launched their review following the club's FA Cup triumph over Manchester City last season.

Man United beat their cross-town rivals 2-1 at Wembley Stadium as Ten Hag's future was clouded by uncertainty.

Ten Hag is known to be delighted at the outcome, but he was growing frustrated at the time it took for Man United to reach their verdict.

And the club's decision to keep the Dutchman has stunned the Man United players, according to a report.

Shocked players thought their manager would be sacked before finding out he's staying in his position.

The Telegraph claims players found out the club had decided to keep the 54-year-old when news broke publicly late on Tuesday night.

Last week, players were convinced Ten Hag would be relieved of his duties ahead of the new season and still believed that was the most likely scenario after the Red Devils completed their season review.

Most of the players were kept out of the loop as they are with their respective international camps, which meant they were not privy to inside formation.

Insiders have been impressed with the way in which Ten Hag coped with the review as his future was the subject of intense scrutiny.

A source said: "The overriding reaction to the news among the players seems to have been surprise. They didn’t really have a clue about what was going on."

However, most of the players are said to be 'pleased' the uncertainty over the managerial situation has now ended.

Negotiations have begun over a contract extension for Ten Hag, who has been on holiday with his family in Ibiza.
