Manchester United fans were full of praise for one unlikely player during their Community Shield clash against Manchester City.

On Saturday United and City drew 1-1 at Wembley before Pep Guardiola's side prevailed 7-6 in the penalty shootout.

Two months after beating City in the FA Cup final, a late Alejandro Garnacho goal looked to have given Erik ten Hag's side a 1-0 win.

However, substitute Bernardo Silva headed home from close range in the dying moments to send the game to penalties.

The shootout began with Andre Onana saving from Silva, before Ederson kept City in it by denying Jadon Sancho.

After a string of excellent spot-kicks, Jonny Evans skied his effort before Manuel Akanji scored the winner.

United grew into the game after weathering an early City storm, and in the second half they were undoubtedly the better side.

Though it was substitute Garnacho who gave United the lead, United fans were particularly impressed by Casemiro.

The midfielder endured a disappointing 2023-24 campaign, with many supporters calling for him to be sold this summer.

But after enjoying a full summer break - he was not selected to play for Brazil at the Copa America - Casemiro put in an accomplished performance at the heart of United's midfield before converting his effort in the shootout.

"Casemiro has been absolutely SOLID in this game," one fan wrote on X.

Another commented: "This performance is the Casemiro I know."

A third fan said: "He needed a nice offseason to get back in shape maybe," while another replied: "If this is the Casemiro we're getting for the sesson, I can vibe with it."

Another excited fan said: "Are you watching this Casemiro performance he’s been superb but agenda merchants won’t say s***."

Another noted: "Casemiro still does things no one else at United can do."
