Man Utd fans back Jonny Evans to be the club's new captain

Some Manchester United fans are obviously very excited for the return of Jonny Evans at the club and want to see him named the new captain.

If a summer at United doesn't at least somewhat represent a rubbish football based soap opera then is it really a summer at United at all?

This year we've been 'treated' to the longest ownership debacle in the history of football and the usual host of transfer sagas.

With Mason Mount signed and Andre Onana on his way any day now the drama may have dissipated somewhat that was until Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy.

Not only does it mean that we've got an annoyed Maguire who may now leave the club but also the impending reveal of a new captain at Old Trafford.

The latest twist from United's version of Coronation Street came on Tuesday afternoon however, with the reveal of the return of popular former character Jonny Evans.

The defender's return eight years after he left the club was as surprising as Harold Bishop returning to Neighbours with amnesia after disappearing on a beach, but that's the nature of soaps.

Now some United fans want to see the two storylines combine and have Evans become the man to take over from Maguire, because he's the only member of the squad with a Premier League winner's medal.

"Johnny Evans for captain!", one fans simply put it.

" Imagine Ten Hag gives the armband to Evans just days after telling Maguire he’s no longer captain," joked a second.

Looking forward to Wednesday's game with Lyon where the Northern Irishman will return another said: "Should make Johnny Evans captain tomorrow and let's see what reaction that gets!"

"Jonny Evans is the only player in the squad with a Premier League winners' medal. He's the undisputed king of the dressing room now, give him the armband," added a fourth supporter.

"They should make Evans captain, he knows how to win the Prem unlike those other losers," exclaimed another.

A sixth laughed: "Jokes that Evans can stroll around the squad flashing his Prem medal at everyone."

And another pointed out an awkward truth noting: "Jonny Evans being the most decorated Premier League player in that dressing room is giving me the giggles."

The 35-year-old actually won the league title three times at United, including the last time the side won the league under Sir Alex Ferguson 10 years ago.

He also captured the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup at Old Trafford and later added an FA Cup during his time at Leicester City.

However he was also club captain as the team were relegated last season and also went down with West Bromwich Albion in 2018.

We can't wait to see what his latest character arc brings...
